(TheConservativeNews.org) – When Americans vote for president every four years, they may think the candidate who receives the popular vote is going to be the winner every time. That’s just not the case; it’s the Electoral College that really matters. In fact, 5 out of 45 times in our history, the candidate with the popular vote lost. The most recent time was in 2016 when President Donald Trump beat the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton.
When the race was called, Democrats were outraged. They quickly called for an end to the Electoral College — a dangerous idea that could destroy our democracy.
Electoral College History
When the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution, they created the Electoral College in order to elect presidents. Article II, Section 1, Clause 3 set up a system in which people are chosen as “electors.” These folks actually cast the final vote for the commander-in-chief.
The framers wanted to make sure the big states didn’t drown out the small states in the process. So, after much negotiation, the Electoral College was born. Now, more than 200 years later, it’s just as important as it was when the nation began.
Vital to Our Democracy
Republican National Committee Chairwoman, Ronna McDaniel, expressed the importance of the electoral system we have during a speech in February 2020.
The chairwoman said it would be “devastating to our country” if we abolished the Electoral College because the “Founders intended for every state to have representation.” McDaniel explained that by eliminating the system, the Democratic Party will “rig the election” and “take away our votes.”
Imagine a country where Liberal cities pick the President of the United States every four years. That’s what would happen if the Electoral College were abolished.
Instead of each state being equally represented and choosing the commander-in-chief together, the large population centers in Democratically-run cities would drown out middle America. It’s a terrifying prospect, isn’t it?
