What Gun Control Looks Like in 2020

( – In America, the year 2020 has been like no other in living memory. First, the coronavirus struck nearly halting the country’s economy and then the racial upheaval began, tearing us apart. People have a right to be afraid and as part of that, the Second Amendment of the Constitution has once again come front and center.

With the pandemic came the euphemistically named stay-at-home orders, which in reality became lockdowns. The term “essential businesses” became part of the American lexicon with enough failing where tens of millions of people were forced to seek unemployment benefits.

People seem to agree that grocery stores, pharmacies, and gas stations qualified regardless of any political affiliations. When it came to places where citizens could buy guns to protect themselves, then the ideological barrier between Conservatives and Liberals slammed down.

In the deep-blue states of Washington and New Jersey, for example, gun stores were at first mandated to close by their governors. However, President Donald Trump stepped in and declared that the federal government deemed them essential.

Progressive Liberal Hypocrisy

The Constitution of the United States and the amendments thereto are supposed to be the rule of law for the country with the first 10 of those being especially cherished. Of course, the political left can be a little … selective … with their interpretations.

Their argument against individual citizens owning weapons has been and continues to be the first clause of the Second Amendment. It says, “[a] well-regulated militia…” contending it’s for the military only. Even their current rhetoric blithely ignores the fact that the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) ruled in the 2008 case of Heller v. District of Columbia, that it’s of no effect.

This means people should strictly adhere to the “shall not be infringed” part of the law, but in their tried-and-true manner, they don’t. Perhaps they just got confused and thought SCOTUS said to ignore “peaceably” part of the First Amendment regarding the citizens’ right to assemble.

When large numbers of people came out to protest the death of George Floyd while in the custody of four Minneapolis police officers, that right was fully in effect. However, when they turned into riots, looting, and the armed takeover of neighborhoods in Seattle, Washington, and Portland, Oregon, they tried to argue the same protection should apply.

The Democratic officials in those states capitulated to the groups that committed these insurrections – including Black Lives Matter (BLM) and Antifa – and very loudly and publicly told President Trump not to send in the United States military to quell the rebellion. Instead, they erected barricades for them to hide behind and refused to send the police in for any reported crime until the tragic death of a child in Seattle.

Progressive Liberals continue their attempt to turn the country into “The People’s Republic of America” unabated, which shouldn’t really be that surprising when one looks at the other people their ideology mimics. Especially when it comes to their opponents and their ability to protect themselves.

A quote attributed to Nazi ruler Adolf Hitler says, “to conquer a nation first disarmament citizens.” Another from the Soviet Union’s Joseph Stalin reads “[i]f the opposition disarms well and good. If it refuses to disarm, we shall disarm it ourselves.” Neither of those men were exactly fans of personal freedom.
