Tensions have been high, with both countries continuing to disagree on a number of matters, but the mistrust might be hitting a breaking point. US intelligence has learned of a military advancement in China that could suggest the communist country is preparing for war.
Satellite imagery shows China has constructed at least two naval ships that resemble those in the US Navy fleet. While there’s no direct indication of what China plans to do with the replicas, the US Naval Institute (USNI) seems to believe that they’re for target practice. The mock-ups are on rail systems, which some experts believe China could use to simulate a moving target — in this case, a navy vessel.
In recent years China has heavily focused on its military as it looks to equal or surpass that of the United States by 2050. Just last month, the Pentagon admitted China’s military and nuclear programs were further along than they’d originally believed. The Pentagon’s report also indicated that China is strengthening its forces to fight and win wars against specific adversaries, with the United States being a possible target.
