( – Fentanyl is one of the deadliest illegal substance in American communities today. The synthetic opioid became popular among drug manufacturers over the last five years, and overdose deaths have skyrocketed ever since. Now, it appears some of our lawmakers are suggesting we need better relations with China to address this problem effectively.

China made fentanyl, and substances related to it, illegal in 2019. The importation rates of these compounds into the US from China have since dropped somewhat, but the Asian giant reportedly remains the most important source for US buyers of the products.

On Tuesday, August 24, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission published a report on this issue. It found cooperation between American and Chinese authorities “on the ground” was lacking. It claimed, for example, that Chinese enforcement officials frequently delay inspections on targets suspected of involvement in fentanyl precursor production for several days, potentially allowing those involved to escape detection. China also “lags” in other ways, including investigating money laundering and pursuing criminal cases.

Reuters contacted China’s foreign ministry for a response to the report. A spokesperson strongly rejected the committee’s claims, pointing to the Chinese regime’s work in recent years to keep fentanyl production under control.

However, fentanyl’s continued importation into the US clearly demands further cooperation.
