(TheConservativeNews.org) – President Joe Biden made clear his intention to attempt to pass a massive infrastructure package from the early days of his tenure in the White House. Lawmakers eventually managed to put together a bipartisan deal that would spend $1.2 trillion over 8 years (much less than the president originally intended), but the legislation remains mired in controversy. President Biden had stated he would not sign the bill unless a larger human infrastructure package accompanies it, a move that has caused disgruntlement and confusion among conservative lawmakers. Biden later claimed he hadn’t said that, but the damage was done.
Now, GOP Senators have another reason to oppose the bill.
On Friday, July 9, former President Donald Trump released a statement about the package through his spokesperson, Liz Harrington. He called on Senate Republicans to reject the package, alleging it would have to be funded by repealing tax cuts he had implemented during his presidency. He also took aim at the “RINO Republicans” working on the bipartisan deal with “Radical Left Democrats,” stating they would achieve nothing through their efforts.
Trump also complained that the money raised through increased taxes would end up being spent on the “Green New Deal Marxist agenda.”
There was initial excitement last month when it looked like a workable infrastructure deal might actually be on the table. Now, however, its prospects are looking decidedly dimmer.
