(TheConservativeNews.org) – Impeachment is a process by which Congress can vote to remove a sitting president if they harm the office by behaving illegally. Considering the degree to which Donald Trump was vilified by his opponents in Washington, DC, it was not surprising when he was eventually impeached.
In 2019, the House of Representatives passed a motion to impeach him, alleging he put pressure on Ukrainian officials to dig up dirt on Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Ironically, it has since transpired no such pressure was necessary, as evidence of Hunter’s misdeeds eventually emerged on its own.
Who Was Behind the Impeachment?
Unsurprisingly, the main voice calling for Donald Trump’s impeachment belonged to none other than House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Pelosi has consistently been one of the president’s most hysterical critics since he took office in 2016. When she resumed her position as Speaker in 2019, it was inevitable that Pelosi would make an attempt to have Trump removed from office.
Adam Schiff (D-CA), Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, led the proceedings. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Zoe Logfren (D-CA), Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Val Demings (D-FL), Jason Crow (D-CO), and Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) also sat on the panel.
What Came of the Impeachment Proceedings?
In late 2019, the impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump began in the Senate and lasted for just over a month. The president’s defense hinged on the fact that the Ukrainian president claimed he did not feel pressured by Trump in the way the Democrats alleged. Also, the US eventually released military aid to Ukraine of their own accord; this, the Democrats claimed, was the incentive Trump used to get their leadership to do his bidding.
Unsurprisingly, given the Republican majority in the Senate and the lack of evidence against the president, the impeachment motion failed on February 5, 2020.
Most political analysts agree Donald Trump’s impeachment was politically motivated. While it was always going to garner support in the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, the Senate was never going to vote in favor of it. Nancy Pelosi and her associates decided to undertake these proceedings anyway to make the president look bad ahead of the election. It didn’t matter to them that this was a flagrant abuse of political procedure and a complete waste of taxpayer money.
