(TheConservativeNews.org) – Progressives want to pass a monster $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill. However, the price tag with that plan is too hefty for Republicans and moderate Democrats. Instead, some people believe the lawmakers should pursue a smaller bipartisan bill, but even that will be a challenge.
Liberals warned Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi that they would tear down the bipartisan effort unless Democrat-centrists in the Senate committed to passing Biden’s overall plan. The progressive ultimatum is the newest battle Pelosi faces as she and Congress are already under pressure to keep the government open and decide how to approach the national debt limit.
The vote on the $1.2 trillion package is set for Thursday. With the Senate already passing the bill, House Democrats are now the most significant threat as they claim they’ll tank it unless demands are met by everyone else. Of course, this isn’t the first time the party has divided over a bill. Moderate Democrats, such as Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), don’t favor the larger $3.5 trillion spending plan. Without the commitment of Sinema and Manchin to pass the larger bill, House Democrats and progressives assert they won’t allow any bipartisan spending plans to pass either.
The fighting among Democrats has led to what is essentially a deadlock in Congress. If members can’t reach an agreement soon, a government shutdown might be unavoidable.
