(TheConservativeNews.org) – The city of Rigby, Idaho narrowly avoided tragedy earlier this month after a young girl opened fire on the grounds of her middle school. The sixth-grader fired several shots over a five-minute period, hitting three people. Luckily, none of the three suffered life-threatening injuries.
It has since emerged that the fearless and compassionate actions of one of Rigby Middle School’s teaching staff prevented a far worse incident. On Wednesday, May 19, Krista Gneiting appeared on Good Morning America to tell her story.
Upon hearing shots, Gneiting directed her students to run to safety before going to investigate. Incredibly, when she found the young shooter, she “slowly pulled the gun out of her hand [and] pulled her into a hug.” She continued to embrace and comfort the child after disarming her.
This story is unusual in that the suspect is female. The perpetrators in mass shooting events are women or girls just 2% of the time.
School shootings never have happy endings, and this story has undoubtedly left heartbreak and trauma in its wake. Had it not been for the bravery of Krista Gneiting, however, things could have been much worse.
