States Fight Back Against Taxpayer-Funded Abortions

(TheConservativeNews.org) – One of the most controversial aspects of liberal politics nowadays is its insistence on access to abortion being a fundamental human right. Most of those on the Left view termination as something that’s part of normal family planning and healthcare. Conservatives traditionally oppose it, pointing to the fact that, in literal terms, it amounts to the taking of human life.

Some states are pushing back against the taxpayer’s involvement in this hot-button issue.

Taxpayer-Funded Abortions

Another aspect to this discussion is that of taxpayer funding for abortions. Under the law set out by the SCOTUS case of Roe v. Wade, states cannot ban abortion; however, there’s no requirement for governments to fund termination procedures.

The Title X Family Planning Program, which came into existence in 1970, gives grants to family planning clinics on the condition funds do not promote abortion. Over the years, however, many organizations providing termination-related services (including affiliates of Planned Parenthood) have received payments from the program.

Trump’s Rule Change & Biden’s Reversal

In March of 2019, then-President Donald Trump changed the rules around Title X so that no organization providing abortions or referring patients for them (bar in cases of rape, incest, or a medical emergency) could benefit from the scheme. In the period that followed, 410 Planned Parenthood clinics voluntarily left the program.

As has been the case with many other Trump-era policies, this rule is now in the crosshairs of the Biden administration. The Department of Health and Human Services (which is headed by noted radical leftist Xavier Becerra) has proposed allowing Planned Parenthood affiliates to receive Title X grants once more.

Pushback From Attorneys General

On Monday, May 17, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost led a group of 21 GOP attorneys general in penning a letter to Becerra about this issue. The letter points out that “[many] Americans regard abortion as the murder of a child,” and that the rule change on the table would provide government subsidies for abortion, which would violate Title X. The letter goes on to complain that the department has not offered any proper justification for its proposed rule change.

It seems reasonable that American taxpayers should not be forced to fund abortion when a significant portion of them consider it no different than murder. Of course, the Biden administration has little time for such considerations, as it’s too busy pursuing its radical agendas.
