(TheConservativeNews.org) – Regardless of the military branch, it isn’t easy to earn promotions. Officials typically demote soldiers as part of a punishment, but for one devastated soldier, the news came unexpectedly and unprovoked.

56-year-old Jonathan Payne recently received a demotion due to the army restructuring itself. The morning of his death, the soldier’s wife, Sarah Payne, noted that he seemed fine and had received confirmation of his new role in the army before he left. Mr. Payne traveled from his home in Southampton to Beachy Head, where the coast guard found his body.

An investigation into his death found that Mr. Payne may have suffered from an undiagnosed post-traumatic stress disorder. Payne’s wife noted that her husband had become distant, adding that Mr. Payne had nightmares and flashbacks more frequently in the eight months leading up to his death.

The grieving widow said her husband had been in the army for 35 years but was concerned about the future of his position. She mentioned that he’d said he loved her and that he would see her later, the day that he left for Beachy Head. Mrs. Payne spoke about a cell phone conversation the two had around 2:00 p.m. that day and insisted he sounded fine.

But he wasn’t fine; he went missing later that day. Vehicle checks tracked his car to Beachy Head, where the coast guard reportedly found his body at the bottom of the cliff. Tragedies like these happen every day, but they are preventable. Don’t be afraid to call a suicide hotline for yourself or someone you’re concerned about; it could save a life.
