( – There always seems to be a fresh development in the controversy around Hunter Biden’s Ukrainian business dealings. Now the Senate is officially weighing in.

On Wednesday, September 23. The Senate Homeland Security Committee and the Senate Finance Committee released an interim report detailing the findings of their joint investigation into Hunter Biden’s financial affairs.

The Report

Hunter Biden, son of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, sat on the board of a Ukrainian energy company from 2014 to 2019. Burisma Holdings, a natural gas giant, hired the junior Biden as a corporate governance consultant. The report found a highly-lucrative financial relationship existed between Hunter Biden and the head of Burisma, Mykola Zlochevsky. Biden would have made millions of dollars through this alliance.

Joe Biden, Obama’s vice-president at the time, was closely involved in American efforts to stamp out corruption in Ukraine. This created concerns that his son’s corporate activities could have caused a conflict of interest. The new Senate report alleges that officials within the Obama administration knew Hunter Biden’s activities were potentially inappropriate in the context of his father’s vice-presidency — but failed to intervene.

Senators Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Ron Johnson (R-WI), Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, spearheaded the effort behind this report. The pair commented that both Democrats and executive agencies had been uncooperative during the investigation. Grassley and Johnson also stressed this was just an interim publication and that much work remains to be done with their inquiries.

The Bidens’ Response

While the Biden family strongly denies any wrongdoing, the mere fact of Hunter Biden’s involvement with Burisma Holdings is sufficient to warrant scrutiny. Whether or not his business dealings had any direct bearing on his father’s actions as vice-president is uncertain. However, this report makes it clear the situation was, at the very least, highly problematic — and the Obama administration knew it.

Since Donald Trump first campaigned for the office of president in 2016, left-leaning commentators have persisted with accusations he was involved in financial impropriety. It now appears Joe Biden could be the one whose campaign suffers because of these kinds of allegations in 2020.

While the details of his involvement in these affairs remain unclear, it’s obvious Biden knew of inappropriate dealings taking place. Coupled with growing concerns about his cognitive failings, this could be enough to deal a fatal blow to his presidential campaign.
