Republicans Raise Questions Over FBI Targeting Women’s Group

( – The FBI is arguably the most famous policing institution in the world. Employing over 35,000 people, it’s always on hand to investigate violations of federal law. Or, at least, that’s what it’s supposed to do.

Unfortunately, the FBI has been revealed as a heavily politicized organization in recent years. Like many other things, this fact was brought under the spotlight by former President Donald Trump. After the FBI concluded its investigation of the Hillary Clinton email scandal, a review of the probe found agents exhibited “poor judgment” and a “lack of professionalism,” reportedly motivated by “hostility toward… Donald Trump.” Now, it appears the Bureau’s anti-conservative bias is showing once again.

The FBI Investigates Concerned Women for America

Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is reportedly going after the FBI over its investigation of Concerned Women for America (CWA), a conservative, pro-life organization. The FBI examined the nonprofit in 2016 over concerns it may have been engaged in embezzlement or fraud, but decided there were no grounds for an investigation into those alleged offenses. However, the agency initiated a probe into the group anyway.

The revelation became public by virtue of an FBI document that the Cato Institute targeted with a Freedom of Information request. The document shows that the FBI justified its investigation of the CWA on the basis of an unfavorable rating from Charity Navigator, a group that analyzes nonprofits on their transparency and financial stability. Charity Navigator handed down this rating because the CWA “[underperformed] most charities” in its area of operation.

So, why would the FBI be so keen to pursue an organization for such a seemingly insignificant reason? Well, it turns out, the head of the group was a strong supporter of Donald Trump during his first run for the White House. Go figure.

Unfortunately, parts of the FBI document are redacted. These redactions limit what we know about the means agents used to look into the dealings of the CWA.

Where Do We Go from Here?

The “Defund the Police” movement has had largely disastrous outcomes thus far. That being said, it has served to highlight the risks posed by a society with no faith in its law enforcement, be it federal, state, or local. If President Joe Biden wants to make policing in America effective again, he needs to start by stamping out the bias and corruption that is clearly endemic in the FBI and other federal agencies.
