(TheConservativeNews.org) – This year’s election season has taken yet another unexpected turn. On Friday, October 2, Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he and his wife Melania had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. The president’s physician, Dr Sean Conley, later confirmed this and stated the pair would quarantine at the White House, where President Trump would be able to perform most of his normal duties.
The president and first lady sought tests after a presidential aide reported she had tested positive. Hope Hicks, who works closely with President Trump and often travels with him, received news of her diagnosis on Thursday.
It’s still too early to say whether the debate scheduled for Miami on October 15 will proceed as scheduled. If organizers do have to cancel it, October 22 will be the next (and last) opportunity we get to see Trump and Biden go head-to-head.
Predictably, some people have viewed this as an opportunity to attack Trump, or suggest that this illness is a just reward for his perceived shortcomings as a president. However, most political leaders have taken the opportunity to wish him and Melania well. This includes many senior figures in the Democrat party.
Update: Donald Trump was admitted to Walter Reed medical center late on Friday. His medical team expects that he will remain there for a few days. The White House has stated that this is just a precautionary measure, and that the president will be able to work from the center.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of an election and, in doing so, forget the candidates are human. This is a valuable opportunity for us all to acknowledge there is more to life than politics as we wish the president and first lady a quick recovery.
