(TheConservativeNews.org) – Over the last year, our society has become so confrontational we now immediately associate the word “protest” with the word “violent.” In this context, it’s easy to forget about the rich tradition of peaceful protest we have in the United States. No figure epitomizes this tradition more than Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the revolutionary civil rights campaigner who was instrumental in the fight against racial prejudice in America.

On Monday, January 18 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), protesters took to the streets in New York, ostensibly to honor Dr. King. However, their actions did not reflect a true belief in his ideals. Police arrested 29 people during a protest that involved the throwing of bottles, destruction of property, verbal abuse of officers, and other general violence.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea denounced the actions of these people, calling their approach to protesting a “disgrace.” He called for the punishment of those “trying to destroy our way of life” with their violent actions, but clarified he did not want to see genuine, nonviolent demonstrators reprimanded.

On the police’s side of the story, 11 officers were injured during Monday’s unrest. That statistic alone illustrates how unacceptable this new style of “protesting” truly is.
