(TheConservativeNews.org) – The House will not hold a vote this week on a bill to improve security for Supreme Court Justices after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) denied House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy‘s (R-CA) second unanimous consent request to immediately pass the bill on Thursday following an assassination attempt on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
“We had hoped that we could do it today but we certainly will do it at the beginning of next week,” Pelosi told reporters on Thursday.
Pelosi also claimed that the justices are already protected, and snapped at a reporter who pointed out that there was just an attempted assassination on Justice Kavanaugh.
“The justices are protected. This issue is not about the justices, it’s about staff and the rest. The justices are protected; you saw the attorney general even double down on that,” Pelosi claimed.
The bipartisan bill to improve security for Supreme Court Justices — which was sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) —passed the Senate unanimously last month but was blocked by House Democrats. The bill would have provided the justices with security protection similar to the protection given to members of the legislative and executive branches.
The day before Pelosi claimed “the justices are protected,” a man armed with a pistol and other weapons was arrested outside Justice Kavanaugh’s home and was charged with “Attempts to kidnap or murder, or threatens to assault, kidnap or murder a United States Judge, to wit: a current Justice of the United States Supreme Court.”
The man, Nicholas John Roske, intended to kill Kavanaugh and then commit suicide according to FBI special agent Ian Montijo.
“Roske then told the detective that he was upset about the leak of a recent Supreme Court draft decision regarding the right to abortion as well as the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas,” Montijo wrote in the criminal complaint. “Roske indicated that the Justice that he intended to kill would side with Second Amendment decisions that would loosen gun control laws.”
“Roske stated that he began thinking about how to give his life a purpose and decided that he would kill the Supreme Court Justice after finding the Justice’s Montgomery County address on the Internet. Roske further indicated that he had purchased the Glock pistol and the other items for the purpose of breaking into the Justice’s residence and killing the Justice as well as himself,” Montijo added.
