No Democrats Show up for Amy Barrett Hearing

( – Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court was advanced by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, October 22. However, this process unfolded in the absence of any Democrats, who boycotted the proceedings as they felt Republicans had rushed it.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) stated the decision to miss the event was not one the Democrat committee members took lightly. However, his party felt Republican attempts to “jam through this nominee” were unacceptable and the hearing was therefore “illegitimate.”

The Democrat boycott made no impact on the outcome of the vote. Because they sat it out, Coney Barrett’s nomination advanced with a vote of 12-0, which was unanimous approval.

Democrats have raised objections to this process since the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg in September. None of their submissions have changed the fundamental fact that appointing Supreme Court justices is a presidential duty, and Donald Trump is still our president. This affair is another example of Democrats interpreting rules to meet their own ends.
