(TheConservativeNews.org) – COVID-19 has caused untold economic devastation across America, forcing the closure of thousands of small businesses. Naturally, this will take a heavy toll on government revenue over the coming months. However, this doesn’t appear to have registered with policymakers in Washington, DC, as they persist in drawing up increasingly expensive spending plans.
On Thursday, February 5, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) introduced a spending bill targeted at children born from 2022 onward. These children would, under the terms of the proposal, receive a $1,000 savings account at birth, and up to $2,000 more annually, depending on their family’s household income.
One might expect this kind of idea only from a Democrat, but Booker wasn’t the only lawmaker to suggest a new social welfare plan. Republican Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) introduced a similar bill on Thursday. The Family Security Act would grant parents thousands of dollars annually for each child they have under the age of 17.
Massive spending propositions like these are clear appeals to populism. Given Romney’s choice to cross party lines and condemn Donald Trump during both his impeachments, it’s not surprising he’s having to descend to moves like this to curry favor with voters.
