(TheConservativeNews.org) – Religious organizations have frequently found themselves in bitter disputes since the onset of the pandemic. Some have protested that governments have failed to prioritize organizations of faith when setting restrictions, while others have complained that certain religions have received more favorable treatment than others. Last October, for example, members of New York’s Jewish community took to the streets to protest at their perceived unfair treatment by the Cuomo administration.
This is an issue outside the United States as well. On Monday, June 28, there were negative outcomes for two pastors in separate court trials in Alberta, Canada. In May, Artur Pawlowski was arrested for holding religious services in his church in defiance of COVID-19 restrictions. On Monday, June 28, he and his brother David were both found guilty of contempt of court, and may receive jail time at their sentencing hearing in July.
In June, Pastor Tim Stephens was arrested for holding banned outdoor services. Also on Monday, he learned that he was set to spend another two weeks in a maximum-security detention facility. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) commented on this situation.
As you can see from Hawley’s tweet above, American Conservatives are concerned about these events north of the border. Religious persecution has a tendency to spread, and GOP representatives with strong support from religious communities will be keen to stamp out this threat as quickly as possible.
