(TheConservativeNews.org) – Last month, world leaders gathered in Glasgow, Scotland to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference’s COP26 Summit. Countries reached a deal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, compared to 2010, by 2030; the goal is to reduce emissions by 45%. Despite increased efforts across the globe, President Biden’s special envoy for climate, John Kerry, feels as though some countries are slacking.
On December 1, Kerry essentially called out a handful of countries he feels aren’t doing enough to help relieve the impacts of global warming. Kerry named China, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, India, Indonesia and South Africa, claiming their commitments aren’t enough to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than pre-industrial levels.
Kerry mentioned that these countries need help and the world can’t just dump the responsibility on them. According to Kerry, the fight against climate change is essentially futile without total commitment from China, which is the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases. Biden’s special envoy noted that the United States is already helping developing countries move toward cleaner energy. Some countries have rejected the idea as they believe fossil fuels are crucial to building their economy and think it’s unfair that some countries have had the luxury of using fossil fuels for over a century.
Kerry asserted that no government in the world has the power or resources to make the needed alterations to fight climate change. Instead, he believes private industries are the key to turning the tide.
