Indictment Handed Down in Breonna Taylor Case

( – The death of Breonna Taylor during a police raid in Louisville, KY, in March caused outrage among local communities. On Wednesday, September 23, there was a significant update in the case.

Three officers came before a Kentucky court to face indictment relating to the incident. One officer was indicted on three charges of wanton endangerment, while the other two were released without charge.

Taylor, an emergency room technician, was 26 years old when she died. Police carried out a raid on her apartment, during which one officer fired shots through a window with the blinds pulled. This was in apparent violation of the police department’s “line of sight” policy with regard to discharging weapons. This officer, Brett Hankison, was indicted on Wednesday.

Media attention has focused on Taylor’s race — she’s black — and the idea that, had she been white, she’d be alive today. While some commentators have pointed out that statistics refute this argument, it will likely continue as the dominant narrative in the coming days and weeks.

Civil unrest has already taken root in Louisville in response to the court’s judgment. On Wednesday night, violent protests erupted after the indictment’s publication, with two police officers suffering gunshot wounds. Considering the violence seen across the country for the last number of months, it appears likely that the worst is yet to come in Louisville.
