(TheConservativeNews.org) – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (more commonly known as the ATF) manages policies around these potentially risky materials. The agency pursues its objectives through various regulatory approaches; if, for example, you want to get a firearm license, the ATF is the agency you’ll be dealing with.
Of course, like any federal agency with a law enforcement mandate, there are important questions to be asked about the ATF’s power and how agents make use of it.
Marjorie Taylor Greene Wants to Get Rid of the ATF
On Thursday, June 17, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced legislation that would abolish the ATF. The Brian A. Terry Memorial Eliminate the ATF Act is named after the Marine and Border Patrol Agent who lost his life in a gunfight between smugglers and other criminals while the smugglers were in the process of trafficking drugs into the country from Mexico.
Among the bill’s co-sponsors are Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and Ralph Norman (R-SC). If it passes, it will bring about a host of important legislative changes. Firstly, it would abolish the ATF and repeal all the guidance and regulations the agency set down after August 1 of last year. The functions necessary for the regulation of alcohol and tobacco would return to the FBI.
Also, the ATF would have to publish details of any firearms and ammunition they have confiscated and hold a public auction to distribute them. The proceeds would go to the families of Border Patrol agents killed in the line of duty because of Operation Fast and Furious.
Operation Fast and Furious
This was a scheme under which federal agents allowed criminals to buy guns so law enforcement could track the transactions and infiltrate criminal gangs. Operation Fast and Furious became public knowledge after Brian Terry’s death, as two of the guns found at the scene had been purchased through the program. ATF lost track of most of the weapons that were sold through Operation Fast and Furious.
“Radical, Anti-Gun Democrats”
Greene gave an interview with the Daily Caller before introducing the bill. She discussed her opposition to the ATF, saying “Joe Biden and the radical, anti-gun Democrats” were intending to use the agency to attack “our God-given Second Amendment [rights].”
Marjorie Taylor Greene may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Recently, she even attracted criticism from members of her own party for comparing mask mandates to the Holocaust. Here, however, she’s standing up for the interests of ordinary American gun owners while one of the most anti-gun White House administrations in recent memory does all it can to dissolve the Second Amendment.
