(TheConservativeNews.org) – A number of politicians, particularly governors, have come under fire for how they’ve handled the COVID-19 pandemic in their home states. California’s Democrat governor, Gavin Newsom, is one of the first who comes to mind. His draconian COVID restrictions crippled businesses in the state and, to make matters worse, he disobeyed his own rules by sitting in a restaurant without a mask. Frustrated voters in the state launched a recall attempt against him, which ultimately succeeded in bringing about an election.
As of Monday, August 16, the voting that will decide Governor Newsom’s political fate has begun. Some of the California’s counties have already sent out their mail-in ballots. Data analysts say the outcome of this election will depend heavily on voter turnout. A recent poll showed Californians to be starkly divided between those who want to recall Newsom and those who would like to see him remain in office. Only 36% of registered voters in the survey said they support Newsom’s recall. However, the margin is smaller when considering who will actually be voting. Of those deemed likely to vote, 47% support the recall.
The recall ballots pose two questions to voters: whether they would like to see Newsom leave office, and, if so, who they would select to replace him. Voters can then select from a list of 46 candidates who hold the qualifications to step in as governor.
This is only the second recall election in California’s history. That fact speaks volumes about the peoples’ strong feelings regarding Newsom. Only time will tell whether that will be enough to vote him out of office. The election will take place on September 14.
