(TheConservativeNews.org) – The Consumer Product Safety Commission is suggesting that the 35 percent of U.S. homes using gas stoves should get rid of them, Bloomberg said Monday.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and World Health Organization (WHO) have said gas stoves are unsafe and linked to respiratory illness like asthma, cardiovascular problems, cancer, and other health conditions, according to reports by groups such as the Institute for Policy Integrity and the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
Bloomberg reported that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission plans to act on the appliances because the pollutants can cause respiratory and health issues.
“Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned,” agency commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. told Bloomberg.
The report said the federal agency plans “to take action” to address the indoor pollution caused by stoves.
The AGA has previously pushed back against Trumka’s comments, saying that the emissions from cooking with gas are similar to emissions created when cooking with electric stoves and that they plan on submitting evidence to prove it.
“Any discussion or perpetuation of the allegations in this report which is funded by non-governmental organizations to advance their agenda to remove consumer energy choice and the option of natural gas is reckless.” the AGA added.
Similar sentiments were echoed by West Virginia’s Democratic senator Joe Manchin on Twitter midday Wednesday.
“This is a recipe for disaster. The federal government has no business telling American families how to cook their dinner. I can tell you the last thing that would ever leave my house is the gas stove that we cook on,” Manchin wrote.
Due To backlash U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission chairman Alexander D. Hoehn-Saric issued a statement Wednesday assuring the public that his agency has no intention of banning gas stoves after a commission official drew the ire of the cooking public by suggesting the appliances might be banned in the near future due to the alleged health threat they pose to Americans.
“Over the past several days, there has been a lot of attention paid to gas stove emissions and to the Consumer Product Safety Commission,” Hoehn-Saric wrote in an official statement released Wednesday. “To be clear, I am not looking to ban gas stoves and the CPSC has no proceeding to do so.”
