(TheConservativeNews.org) – In recent days, news headlines have been full of stories about the antagonistic relationship between the US and the Taliban. Media figures have pointed the finger at various US leaders as the extremist militia has assumed control of the nation once again. However, there’s still active resistance to the Taliban within Afghanistan, and it’s not going away without a fight.
On Tuesday, August 17, reports emerged that Amrullah Saleh, the former vice president of Afghanistan, declared himself the “caretaker president” of the country following former President Ashraf Ghani’s departure. Saleh noted the provision of the Afghan constitution, which provides for the appointment of the VP to this role in the event of the “absence, escape, resignation, or death” of the country’s leader.
That’s not all. It appears Saleh and his followers, who are currently staying in the Taliban-free province of Panjshir, are preparing for engagement with the terrorist group. The video in the tweet below appears to show Saleh and other military figures getting on a helicopter bound for Panjshir.
According to Trump-era National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, civil war in Afghanistan is now a very real possibility. While no one wants to see more conflict in the region, it’s encouraging to know there’s an independent resistance within that may try to oust the Taliban.
