(TheConservativeNews.org) – Foreign election interference has remained a constant threat during this year’s campaign season, and both presidential candidates have made reference to its seriousness. On Friday, October 30, two federal agencies released a report about the attempts of cybercriminals to influence this week’s vote.
The FBI and the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) jointly released the document, which looks specifically at Iranian hacking attempts. It states hackers have managed to access the voter registration data of at least one state. The report also says these actors have created a large number of “fictitious media sites,” which publish harmful material, including anti-American propaganda.
The report speculated that the aim of this project was likely to “sow discord” among voters and damage faith in the electoral process.
Foreign election interference has been a hot-button issue since the 2016 presidential election. While discussions about it can become heavily politicized, the possibility of foreign countries influencing the outcomes of our democratic processes is a dangerous one. Still, reports like this one are encouraging, as it shows our federal agencies are capable of addressing these threats.
