FBI Now Asking People to Report Hate Crimes

( – According to federal law, a hate crime involves a physical, verbal, or intimidatory attack on an individual or group because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or other immutable characteristics. We have made great strides toward becoming a culture without these crimes in America, but we still have a long way to go. Now, the FBI has come up with a new initiative to help curb these kinds of offenses.

On Wednesday, August 18, FBI Special Agent in Charge George M. Crouch, Jr., revealed a new scheme encouraging citizens to report hate crimes. The agency will roll out the program from its New Jersey office. In addition to an emphasis on reporting, it will also promote public awareness efforts and community outreach initiatives. New Jersey residents can expect to see advertisements related to the program on buses, trains, and billboards in the near future.

According to the FBI announcement of the program, hate crimes (particularly in relation to race) have spiked in New Jersey over the last two years.

The campaign will begin this month and continue until November 2021. Officials will use the slogan “Protecting Our Communities Together” on advertisements and other documentation related to the program.

Anyone wishing to report a hate crime offense can do so via the 1-800-CALL-FBI number or online at
