(TheConservativeNews.org) – Election security laws continue to cause frustration at the level of both the state and federal governments. Last week on Capitol Hill, the For the People Act, which was the Democrats’ attempt to radically redesign voting laws across the country, failed in the Senate. A number of states are in the process of revamping their voting laws, with some having already passed legislation and dozens of bills still in the pipeline.
Georgia is perhaps the state in which new election legislation has caused the most controversy, with high-profile companies and public figures alleging the new rules are racist. Now, the Biden administration is getting in on the act; Attorney General Merrick Garland announced a lawsuit against Georgia over the new law last Friday, June 25.
The president has been vocal about his opposition to the bill in the past, drawing parallels between it and Jim Crow laws.
However, not everyone shares Biden’s view. On Saturday, June 26, Jonathan Turley, a professor of law at George Washington University, slammed the lawsuit on Fox News. Turley said he was “highly skeptical” of the suit, adding that it could actually produce results in court that the administration doesn’t want. He then spoke about the fact that requiring identification at voting centers, a key element of Georgia’s new system of rules, was a popular policy among voters.
Turley also noted the fact that, Constitutionally speaking, the right to administer elections rests with the states. The Democrats may not pay this consideration too much heed, but judges will hopefully be much more conscious of it.
