( – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday activated the state’s National Guard amid a migrant surge in the Florida Keys and called President Joe Biden’s response to immigration “inept,” saying the Biden administration has “failed to provide the resources necessary to respond to the current mass migration event.”

DeSantis’ order also directs state law enforcement agencies and other state agencies to assist local governments responding to the increase in migrant landings in South Florida.

“As the negative impacts of Biden’s lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden administration’s failure falls on local law enforcement, who lack the resources to deal with the crisis,” said DeSantis. “That is why I am activating the National Guard and directing state resources to help alleviate the strain on local resources. When Biden continues to ignore his legal responsibilities, we will step in to support our communities.”

Federal, state, and local law enforcement have encountered more than 8,000 migrants in waters off the coast of Florida since August 2022, DeSantis said.

“Florida has a long history of helping refugees, including Cubans and others fleeing communist regimes, find support after they arrive in the United States; however, this has always involved support from the federal government and a large, coordinated effort amongst state, federal, and local governments,” DeSantis said.

Nearly 1,400 illegal aliens were apprehended at sea and along the Florida Keys over the New Year’s holiday weekend. More than 360 illegal aliens, specifically, arrived on boats at Dry Tortugas National Park.

The influx of illegal immigration forced the United States National Park Service to close Dry Tortugas National Park.

Officials with the National Park Service told the media that “the closure, which is expected to last several days, is necessary for the safety of visitors and staff because of the resources and space needed to attend to the migrants.”

Such attending to the illegal aliens includes providing food, water, and medical services while the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) either gives the arrivals parole to be released into the U.S. interior or has them removed and sent back to their native countries.

“What about tending to the American citizens who pay for the national park and may like to visit the national park over Christmas vacation? What about their interests — like the people of this country, the citizens, the taxpayers?” Fox News’s Tucker Carlson said this week of the park’s closure.

Biden is set to make his first visit to the southern border since becoming president in January 2021 before traveling to Mexico to attend the North American Leaders’ Summit. The border visit will likely include a stop in El Paso, Texas, Sunday, where Democratic El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser declared an emergency authorizing use of additional resources to help with migrants sleeping on the streets.
