Democrats Face Upset Over Wage Ruling

( – The latest chapter in the stimulus package saga has related to a provision that would increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour. Republicans are against the package as a whole, but may not be able to employ the Senate filibuster if Democrats invoke the budget reconciliation loophole. This would allow Democrats to pass the $1.9-trillion spending bill with a simple majority.

Last week, the Senate Parliamentarian indicated the minimum wage provision is not sufficiently related to the budget to pass under reconciliation. However, this decision ultimately lies with Vice President Kamala Harris.

On Monday, March 1, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) sent a letter to President Joe Biden and Vice President Harris appealing to them to disregard the parliamentarian’s decision, and 22 other Democrats co-signed the document.

According to Khanna, who is a leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, this rule change is vital due to the disproportionate impact of the current minimum wage on “women and Black and Brown workers.”

Some progressives are even indicating they would like to see the parliamentarian fired for her ruling. However, Biden has indicated he respects the decision, as have other White House staff, making it less likely Harris will decide to overturn it.
