(TheConservativeNews.org) – Given that several serious data breaches have already occurred this year, cyber attacks have become perhaps the most potent threat facing our nation. The most recent major hack targeted Miami-based IT firm Kaseya, and is believed to have been the work of REvil, a Russia-based criminal group. However, the Biden administration has yet to formally attribute the attack.
Elsewhere, however, it appears American authorities are making more headway.
On Monday, July 19, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it had charged four Chinese individuals with various cybercrimes. The hackers are believed to have had backing from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). American officials slammed China for its involvement in this kind of “malicious” activity.
The criminals mounted attacks on targets from a range of industries over a seven-year period from 2011 to 2018. They targeted organizations in the aviation, defense, health care, education, government, maritime, and biopharmaceutical industries. In all cases, they reportedly looked for data that would benefit Chinese companies, such as the results of research and development projects. The group’s victims were based in a dozen countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
The defendants reportedly attempted to hide the fact that this project had CCP backing by creating a front company. However, DOJ officials spotted this trick. Are there any lengths to which China’s regime will not go in order to pursue its highly worrying agenda?
