Border Patrol Sees Rise in Dangerous Contraband Through Borders

(TheConservativeNews.org) – Fentanyl, which was something not many people knew about a decade ago, is ravaging the United States at the moment. How it’s getting into our country is equally concerning.

Dealers often mix the ultra-potent synthetic opioid into heroin or prescription drugs, as it reduces costs and expands profit margins. Unfortunately, it also makes the product they’re selling far more dangerous. Synthetic opioids other than methadone, a category that refers primarily to fentanyl, caused over 36,000 overdose deaths in the US in 2019. This figure marks the continuation of a massive spike seen over the previous five years, and makes synthetic opioids by far the deadliest category of drug.

So, where is this problem coming from? In large part, it may be arriving from across our southern border. On Wednesday, June 30, NBC reported that federal police have noted a 4,000% increase in fentanyl seizures since 2018.

According to Border Patrol, this uptick is related to the trend of drug cartels producing fentanyl themselves, using imported raw materials from China. The gangs favor fentanyl because its potency makes it easier to smuggle.

Of course, cartel operatives don’t take the risk of smuggling drugs themselves if they can avoid it. One of their preferred trafficking methods is to use illegal immigrants as mules and, with the number of immigrant crossings into the US currently hitting record highs, there’s never been a better time to pursue this particular criminal enterprise.

Still, though, the situation at the border isn’t a “crisis,” at least not according to the Biden administration.
