AFL-CIO Might Primary Pro-Filibuster Democrats

( – Following Texas’ official introduction of a law heavily restricting abortion last week, the Senate filibuster is back in the news. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) slammed the new legislation and claimed Democrats need to get rid of the filibuster to protect the principles set down by Roe vs. Wade. Some moderate Democrats, such as Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), would prefer to retain the filibuster. Now, their positions within the party are under threat because of this stance.

On Tuesday, August 31, the new AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler said her labor union might withdraw support from Democrats who don’t support abolishing the filibuster. She was likely referring primarily to Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. The AFL-CIO provides campaign funding to various Democratic candidates, and Sinema has benefited considerably from multiple workers’ organizations throughout her career.

Shuler’s statement comes in the context of an ongoing push to garner support for the Richard L. Trumka PRO Act, a bill that would grant new capabilities to labor unions. Senator Sinema is currently the only Democrat in the chamber who opposes the bill.

This is a risky move from Shuler. Withdrawing support from moderate Democrats in states like Arizona and West Virginia could pave the way for a Republican replacement rather than a more compliant Democrat.
